With flaxseed gel and butter!

Flaxseed gel Recipe

1 TBSP Flax Seeds (Whole)

1-2 Cups of Water*

Mesh sieve

Wooden spoon or spatula

1 cup & 1 Tablespoon measurements

*Use 1-2 cups of water spending on how thick you want the gel to be! I find this doesn’t affect how it works! And using 2 cups is great for making large batches.

Gather ingredients and equipment.

Measure 1 TBSP of whole flaxseeds and 1 cup of water.

Add water and flaxseeds to the pan and bring to a boil.

The flaxseeds are ready to be turned into gel!

Stir often so the seeds do not stick to the bottom of the pan.

Once your flaxseeds have started to boil, turn the heat down so the flaxseeds are simmering.

Once your flaxseeds start to resemble foam or egg whites your hair gel is almost complete.

The seeds are releasing their gel!

Once your flaxseeds are very foamy or egg like turn off the heat.

Working quickly pour the flaxseed mixture through a mesh sieve into a jug/bowl.

Separating the seeds from gel

Using a spoon or spatula press the flaxseed mixture into the sieve massaging it. Make sure you get every last drop of this lovely gel!

Congratulations you’ve made your own flaxseed gel!

What do you do with your seeds? You can reuse your seeds to make another batch of gel or simply compost them!

How do you store your flaxseed gel?

Flaxseed gel has a very short shelf life because its handmade. You can store your gel in the fridge for up to 2 days. It’s very easy to tell if the gel is off because it has a very distinctive smell! Does this mean you need to make the gel every few days? Of course not. I have a hack for you! You can freeze the gel! It’s so easy and saves time making gel!

MY secret storage method!

This is the easy storage method I always follow. Once you’ve followed the recipe on how to make flaxseed gel above. Simply pour the liquid gel mixture into ice-cube trays. Using a jug is easiest for this. You don’t have to be neat with this either, and you can use your spatula to evenly spread the gel! Place the gel in the freezer. Once they are completely frozen pop them out and place them into a container in your freezer.

To use the gel simply place them onto a plate to defrost. I find it easiest to let them defrost overnight, or place the cube into a container and sit it on the bottom of the shower. The steam will help them defrost whilst you take your shower! Also this works in a bath! I use an upcycled argan oil bottle with a pipette. I find this is perfect to use for defrosted gel.
